Economic Signals, Freight Flows and Safety Outcomes

✦ Neptune D/E

Time 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
How do shifts in the economy ripple through the trucking industry and ultimately influence safety on our roadways? This session connects the dots between freight markets, carrier operations, and safety performance.

Join Andrew King, Director of Operations at OOIDA, and Mat Leo from C.H. Robinson as they explore how economic pressures—from freight demand and fuel costs to driver availability and rates—shape the decisions carriers make every day. Discover what the latest data says about the relationship between economic trends and safety outcomes, and how understanding these signals can help you anticipate risks before they appear on the road.

Whether you’re a regulator, carrier, or industry partner, this session will challenge how you think about safety—because it’s not just about what happens behind the wheel, but what’s happening across the economy.

✦ Neptune D/E

Time 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Moderated by Annie Sovcik | TAT

Whether perpetrated for commercial sex or forced labor, human trafficking – or modern-day slavery – is occurring along America’s roadways. Of the estimated 50 million victims worldwide, thousands of girls, boys, women and men are trafficked for sex or labor in the United States.

This session will provide information about human trafficking in the Midwest and explore the innovative methods that the public and private sectors are using to join forces to combat this crime. Through collaboration, training and leveraging their networks to raise awareness, professional drivers, companies, inspectors, patrol officers, licensing agencies, etc. have a critical role to play in preventing and disrupting this crime.

Investing in Safety: FMCSA Grants and How to Apply

✦ Neptune A/B/C

Time 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Federal grants can spark big safety improvements—but knowing where to start can be challenging. This session will walk eligible organizations through three key FMCSA discretionary grant programs: the CDL Program Implementation (CDLPI), High Priority–CMV (HP-CMV) and Innovative Technology Deployment (ITD) grants.

Isabella Marra will outline the purpose of the CDLPI program, how to apply and highlight success stories from recent grantees. Leroy Taylor will cover the ITD program, offering tips for building stronger, more innovative applications and John Lohmeyer will provide insights on the HP-CMV program, including eligibility requirements, new ideas and examples of past successes.

Whether you represent a state agency, local government, nonprofit, tribal organization or educational institution, this session will help you turn great ideas into funded safety projects that make a real impact.

Protecting Our Most Precious Passengers: Advancing School Bus Safety

✦ Neptune D/E

Time 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Ensuring the safety of students on America’s school buses requires coordination across local districts, state inspection programs and the national transportation industry. This session brings together key voices from each level: Caney Valley Schools Superintendent Blake Vargas will share the perspective of a small district operating its own fleet and navigating limited resources; Nicholas Betts from the Wisconsin DOT will discuss the role of rigorous inspection programs in preventing safety issues before they arise; and Curt Macysyn of the National School Transportation Association will provide insight from the broader industry serving larger districts nationwide.

The panel will examine the primary challenges and barriers facing school transportation safety today—including staffing, training, fleet maintenance, and evolving technology—and explore forward-looking opportunities to improve safety outcomes. Participants will gain insight into strategies, partnerships, and shared priorities that can help advance the safety of school-aged children across the country.
